Shearing operations on the
typical farm is a job left to professionals as injuries to both the shearer and
the animals can disrupt the process. The common injuries are the cuts from the
clippers and injuries due to handling of the animals that could cause strains
and lacerations to the arms, legs and back of the shearer. Animal injuries
include cuts with the clipper and trauma when the animals are captured. To
avoid and minimize these events we will look at a few precautions that will
result in a smooth and injury free activity.
The first area that needs
to be investigated is the holding area that could be fitted with suitable Farm Fencing Equipment to keep the animals from
breaking out. The area should further be clear of any objects that could cause
injury to the shearer or the animals. This area should be free of sharp objects
that could cause obstructions or injury. The area used for shearing should be
well lit and the ventilation must be adequate to remove airborne particles that
could cause discomfort to the shearer.
One of the first things
that should be checked is the equipment. Before the shearing is started the
farmer should conduct a thorough inspection to ensure that the equipment is in
a serviceable condition and that spare clippers are available during the
shearing process. The electrical cord of the Shearing Handpiece must
not be longer that the recommended length of 6 meters and should be free of
cuts and potential damage that could fail.
In addition to this the circuit from which the Shearing Handpiece will
be operated must be fitted with a circuit breaker that will activate in the
event of a wire getting cut or damaged. During periods of wet weather greater
care should be taken when using electrical equipment. The inspection of the
Shearing Handpiece should check for cracked parts, broken or chipped areas
should be replaced or fixed. The state of the Shearing Handpiece and its blades
are the vital ingredient for a fast and injury free operation.
During the shearing process
the use of protective eye wear and clothing is essential and gloves should be
worn when using a Shearing Handpiece
as it may penetrate the skin when direct contact is made. The cord of the
Shearing Handpiece should be tucked behind the shearer and while cutting to the
side to prevent accidental damage to the cord. When the area is occupied by
more than one shearer it is essential to prevent the shearers from bumping into
each other. Sufficient space should be allocated for each person involved in
the operation. Remember that the moving parts of a Shearing Handpiece revolve
at around 2500 RPM and cutting the cord, animal and the shearer is possible.
